Chrismos (ὁ χρησμός )
(SYRACUSE, NEW YORK STATE, USA-- FRIDAY MAY 5TH 2023 ) – Syracuse University is pleased to present "Chrismos (ὁ χρησμός )", an art video endurance performance piece by Stefanos Schultz as part of the MFA Open Studios and BFA Thesis Showcase.
Chrismos will be on view on Friday May 5th from 4 to 7pm at the Film & Media Arts Gallery in the Shaffer Art Building (room 120).
In this project, Schultz draws inspiration from the mythological embodiment of the divine feminine, seduction and danger to recharge the term “harpy” used -predominantly by cis het men- as slang for a “hysterical, scolding, nagging, bad-tempered woman; shrew”.
Using metal (specifically screen wire), as well as digital sculpting and 3D printing, Schultz is commenting on the modern LGBTQIA+ self-empowerment through remembrance (club kid culture) and the utilisation of imagination/fantasy as armour to cruise utopia.
Stefanos Schultz is a Greek/American multidisciplinary artist, who works predominantly with sound, performance art and installation work to explore topics of gender representation, sexuality, ethnicity and space, social media ecology, inclusion and seclusion.
Their latest work has been presented as part of "Moving Forward", the Annual Showcase of the collective Performing Identities Across Culture (PICS) {"27", Schultz, NY (2023)}, as well as the "Preparing the ground for something new" group exhibition {"Just A Frame", Schultz, Berlin (2022)} and the "Open"event at Foundation17, partnering with Manifesta 14 {"Reminders: The Gardener", Schultz, Kosovo (2022)}.
The artist is currently pursuing an MFA at Syracuse University where they reside and work.
